The Devil In Me

December 2022

We present you with the fourth and final installment of the Dark Pictures Anthology’s first season - The Devil in Me. It is an interactive horror game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game was released on November 18, 2022. The Devil in Me is inspired by an American real-life murder castle and its infamous serial killer Henry Howard Holmes.

One of the new main characters is Kate Wilder, played by Jessie Buckley. Kate, one of the five main protagonists, is both an investigative journalist and the host of the documentary film show, Architects of Murder.

For 3Lateral, this project started in the summer of 2021. Supermassive Games had scanned Jessie Buckley and were looking for the next-level quality leap for their latest character. With this in mind, the 3Lateral team applied the MetaHuman asset standards to further increase the visual and performance fidelity.

Cubic Motion continued their long partnership with Supermassive Games by delivering over 17,000 seconds of high-fidelity animation for The Devil in Me. With Jessie Buckley cast in the leading role it was as important as ever that all the nuances of each acting performance were captured and recreated. In addition to Buckley, there was a supporting cast of five leading story roles.

Buckley's digital character was created as a digital double, so each movement from her real-life performance was accurately translated into the character. Supermassive Games used head-mounted cameras to capture these acting performances. The collected video data was solved using Cubic Motion's proprietary facial technology and their expertise in processing and delivering the animation content. This animation data was then integrated into Supermassive's custom Unreal Engine cinematic pipeline.

It was our great pleasure to collaborate with Supermassive Games on creating the conclusion for the Dark Pictures Anthology’s first season. We are looking forward to their next releases!
